About Whales Tales
Te Atatu Peninsula Business Association is excited to be part of Whales Tales 2022. TAPBA with co-sponsor, The Point (Te Atatu Investments) have secured a spot on the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Whales Tales art trail, planned for early 2022!
Whales Tales is presented by WWF-New Zealand, in partnership with Wild in Art and Auckland Unlimited. Originally planned for early 2021, the trail was postponed due to the COVID -19 pandemic.Eighty individually designed whale tails will go on display in streets, parks, and public spaces for 12 weeks from January to April 2022 (specific dates to be advised). There will be one installed in Te Atatu Peninsula town centre, attracting visitors who will use a special app to follow the city-wide art trail.
Our sculpture design is ‘All That Shimmers is Not Gold’ by Matthew Leggett. During the painting of the sculpture, we will follow Matthew’s progress.
The sculptures are inspired by Hauraki Gulf resident, the Bryde’s Whale. The Hauraki Gulf is one of only three places in the world where these whales live in coastal waters. After the art trail closes, the tails will be auctioned to bidders, with proceeds going to WWF-New Zealand and their vital work looking after our oceans, including a programme of work towards restoring the mauri of the Hauraki Gulf, working closely with communities and Iwi.
